Device-Independent Pixel (dip or dp) or Density Independent Pixel, is a pixel unit that can use to express layout dimensions or position in a density-independent way. It allows scaling the display of information and user interaction to different screen sizes by scaling device pixels to match a uniform reference pixel at a normal viewing distance, which should be approximately the same size on all devices.
For example, on the Android operating, a dpi is equivalent to one physical pixel on a 160 Dots Per Inch (DPI) screen. While the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) specifies a dip as equivalent to 1/96th of an inch.
