A Wide Area Telephone Service (WATS) or Wide Area Telecommunication Service, is a form dial-type, long-distance telecommunication service within specified geographic rate areas employing a telephone line between the customer user location and the serving central office, commonly used by businesses and government agencies. There are basically three types of WATS lines: IN-WATS (for incoming calls), OUT-WATS (for outgoing calls), or a combination of both.
