Virtual File System (VFS) or Virtual Filesystem Switch (VFS) is a kernel software layer that handles all system calls related to file systems and provides an abstraction within the kernel that allows different filesystem implementations to coexist.
VFS provides an interface for accessing files and directories from many different types of filesystems so that the kernel does not worry about how to actually communicate to the various file systems that the VFS communicates. It can be used to bridge the differences in Windows, macOS, and Unix file systems, so that applications can access files on local file systems of those types without having to know what type of file system they are accessing.
