What does SMR mean?

Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) is a technology used in Hard Disk Drives (HDD) to increase storage density and overall per-drive storage capacity. The technology uses a shingled write process that overlaps the data tracks on the disk surface like the shingles on a roof, thereby increasing disk areal density. While SMR drives have the same read behavior as typical hard disks, but very slow random write speed, since a write to a track must overwrite and destroy data on all tracks that it overlaps.
