What does SAR mean?

Stock Appreciation Right (SAR) is a right given to an employee to obtain a cash or stock payout equivalent to the increase in the value of a given number of shares over a certain period of time. SAR is a type of bonus program that creates a similar result as a stock option plan. Under SAR, the employees will be eligible to receive a cash payment equaling the difference between the original price and the appreciated price.
