Sulfur (S) or sulphur, is a chemical element with atomic number 16. It is a yellow, brittle solid at room temperature and is commonly used in fertilizers, gunpowder, and the production of sulfuric acid.
The origin of the name "sulfur" comes from the Latin word "sulfurium", which in turn comes from the Greek word "sulfuris" which means "brimstone". Brimstone is another name for sulfur, which often refers to the yellow mineral that is found near volcanic regions.
Note:
Both "sulfur" and "sulphur" are the correct spellings for the chemical element.
Sulfur is the American English spelling, while "sulphur" is the British English spelling.
