Rhesus (Rh) factor is a protein called an antigen that is found on the surface of red blood cells. An antigen is any substance that the body considers “foreign” and thus stimulates the body to produce antibodies against it. Those with Rh factor are Rh positive, while those without are Rh negative. The name Rhesus is from Rhesus monkeys, in whose blood this antigen was first found.
