What does RTS mean?

Request to Send (RTS) is a mechanism used by the 802.11 wireless networking protocol to reduce frame collisions introduced by the hidden node problem. When a station wants to send data to another, it first sends a short Request To Send (RTS) packet to the destination. The receiver responds with a Clear to Send (CTS) packet. On receipt of the CTS, the sender sends its queued data packet(s).
