Reverse Path Forwarding (RPF) is a method used in multicast routers ensuring loop-free forwarding of multicast packets. This method is called reverse path forwarding because instead of looking forward the technology handling will look back to check the reverse path of the packet. The router forwards only the packets that have traveled the shortest path from the source to the router; all other copies are discarded and no loops.
