RFT aims to explain and understand how individuals pursue goals and make decisions based on their motivational orientation.
People have two different ways of thinking about goals: promotion focus and prevention focus.
Promotion focus is about achieving positive outcomes, while prevention focus is about avoiding negative outcomes. The way people think about goals affects the way they achieve them.
