Renal Denervation (RDN) is a medical procedure used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) by interrupting the signals sent by the sympathetic nervous system.
RDN can be performed using radiofrequency energy, ultrasound, or chemical ablation with alcohol. Radiofrequency energy is the most commonly used method, but ultrasound and chemical ablation is also used.
RDN is typically done by inserting a catheter through the groin or arm and threading it up to the renal arteries, which supply blood to the kidneys. Once in place, the catheter delivers controlled radiofrequency energy to the nerves surrounding the renal arteries which causes a controlled ablation to the nerves, effectively "turning off" the sympathetic signals that can cause Blood Pressure (BP) to rise.
Note:
Denervation refers to the process of removing or disabling nerves in a particular organ or area of the body.
