What does RAT mean?
Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) is a rapid diagnostic test for fast detection of the virus in patients. RAT detects the presence or absence of an antigen. It is commonly used for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
RAT involves taking either a saliva sample or nasal swab and then placing the swab in a chemical solution. It works by detecting and reacting to proteins (antigens) on the surface of the virus.
Note:
RAT is not as sensitive (accurate) as the standard Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test used to accurately identify those infected.
