Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is an umbrella term for a range of conditions caused by a build-up of fat in the liver that can lead to liver damage resembling the damage caused by alcohol abuse, but that occurs in people who drink little to no alcohol.
NAFLD is characterized by fat accumulation, also known as steatosis in the liver. This buildup of fat is not caused by heavy alcohol use.
