Iridium (symbol: Ir) is a chemical element with the atomic number 77. It is a dense, hard, silvery-white transition metal that belongs to the platinum group of elements in the periodic table.
The name iridium comes from the Latin word iris, which means rainbow. This naming is because iridium salts can exhibit a variety of bright and colorful compounds, which is reminiscent of the colors seen in a rainbow.
The element was discovered in 1803 by Smithson Tennant, who named it after the rainbow goddess Iris.
