International Organization for Standardization, widely known as ISO, is a non-governmental international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations.
The name ISO is used internationally to describe the organization while eliminating the variety of abbreviations that may come from the translation of the official name "International Organization for Standardization" into the various national languages of its members, such as IOS in English for International Organization for Standardization or OIN in French for Organisation Internationale de Normalisation.
Therefore, its founders decided to give it a short, all-purpose name. They chose “ISO”, derived from the Greek isos, meaning “equal”.
Regardless of the country or language, the organization is always referred to by its short form, ISO.
