Fetal Microchimerism (FM) refers to the presence of a small number of fetal cells in the mother's body after pregnancy.
This phenomenon occurs during pregnancy when fetal cells, including stem cells, cross the placental barrier and enter the maternal bloodstream.
Note:
The placenta, responsible for nutrient and waste exchange between mother and fetus, acts as a semi-permeable barrier.
However, in some cases, fetal cells manage to cross this barrier and enter the maternal bloodstream.
