Flerovium is named after the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia.
The element was first synthesized at JINR in 1998, and its name honors the Russian physicist Georgii Nikolayevich Flerov.
Georgy N. Flerov made significant contributions to the field of nuclear physics and was a pioneer in the study of superheavy elements.
