Fibrin Degradation Products (FDP) are small pieces of proteins that can be found in the bloodstream after the body dissolves a blood clot.
When a blood clot forms, it consists mainly of fibrin, which is a protein that helps in the clotting process. Fibrin is formed from fibrinogen, a soluble protein, during the process of blood coagulation. When a blood clot is formed, fibrinogen is converted into fibrin strands that create a meshwork, stabilizing the clot.
As the body naturally resolves blood clots, the fibrin meshwork is broken down by enzymes called fibrinolytic enzymes. This enzymatic breakdown of fibrin leads to the generation of FDP.
