Cold War (CW) was a period of tension and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union, and their respective allies, that lasted from the end of World War II in 1945 until the 1990s.
The term "cold" is used because the two sides never directly engaged in armed conflict with each other. Instead, the war was primarily fought through economic, political, and military means, including espionage, propaganda, and the development of nuclear weapons.
