What does CDM mean?

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the flexibility mechanisms defined under Article 12 of the Kyoto Protocol (IPCC, 2007) that enables developing countries to participate in joint greenhouse gas mitigation projects. The goals of the CDM are to promote sustainable development in developing countries and to allow industrialized countries to earn emissions credits from their investments in emission-reducing projects in developing countries. Each credit is equivalent to one tonne of CO2. These Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) can be traded and sold, and used by industrialized countries to a meet a part of their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol.
