British thermal unit (Btu) is a unit for measuring thermal (heat) energy. One British thermal unit is equal to the amount of energy used to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit at a constant pressure of one atmosphere. It is approximately equal to 1,055 joules or 252 gram calories or 1055 watt-seconds.
