Advanced Stream Redirector (ASX), or some times called as Active Streaming XML, is a type of XML meta file designed to store a playlist of Windows Media files. .ASX files don't actually contain any streaming media - instead, they provide information telling Windows Media Player where to find a particular media stream on an intranet or Internet site, and how to use it.
