Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nerve cells (neurons) in the brain and spinal cord that controls voluntary muscles. ALS is a type of motor neuron disease that causes nerve cells to gradually break down and die.
ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with it.
ALS is one of the most common neuromuscular diseases worldwide, and people of all races and ethnic backgrounds are affected.
