As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) is a principle used in radiation protection and safety. The primary goal of ALARA is to minimize radiation exposure to individuals and the environment while still allowing for the effective use of radiation for beneficial purposes, such as in medical procedures, industrial applications, and research.
ALARA principle is based on the concept that any exposure to ionizing radiation, no matter how small, carries some level of risk. It aims to minimize exposure to ionizing radiation as much as possible without compromising the benefits of its use. It is achieved through three primary protective measures:
1. Time: Reduce the duration of exposure to limit overall radiation dose.
2. Distance: Increase the distance between individuals and radiation sources to decrease radiation intensity.
3. Shielding: Use protective barriers, such as lead or concrete, to block or absorb radiation.
ALARA is widely adopted in various industries, including healthcare, nuclear power generation, industrial radiography, and research involving radiation.
